Text Luke 15:18-24, Ephesians 6:11-18

Introduction

For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.” This statement in Luke 15, verse 24, is very instructive and also reflective of what happened in the Garden of Eden. Our original identity is the image of God, and our identity connects us with our destiny. Chapter 3 of Genesis, recorded how the enemy subtly stole that identity through deception. In Genesis 2:17, God had said if you ever eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (TKGE) you’ll die, but satan said you will not die. Look at what the Father said; this my son though he was alive somewhere, but here in my house he was dead. He was lost but now he is found. When original identity is lost until it is found, it is only active and alive in the hand of the thief who is in possession of it, but the REAL/ORIGINAL identity is dead.

Think about Carlos of Miami whose identity was stolen to open a fraudulent bank account. He was like a dead man living dead. He was on house arrest, his real bank account frozen, he had no money, he had no job, much emotional/mental trauma. So God was right, satan was wrong! The day Adam and Eve ate the fruit of TKGE we all died and our identities were stolen, but God restored our identity through Jesus, just like the loving father of the prodigal son.

Identity Restoration

The first thing the father did was to restore him as son. Though in his own eyes and mind he is only worth or he only qualifies to be a servant, but the father is like ‘not under my watch, I love you too much to change my value of you’ as long as you are in my house you must be my son. That was a change of identity.

What did the father do to demonstrate the son’s identity restoration? He gave him a robe (the best robe). Then he gave a ring, the authority of a son and power of sonship. How do you identify a policeman?  Badge! You expect him in uniform but even if he is not once you see the badge you begin to respect. The third thing the Dad did was to put sandals (shoes) on his leg for full authority and power, so that as he walks through life his hurt will be minimized.

Jesus’ Blood Covenant and Identity

By the story of the prodigal son Jesus was foretelling how God would restore our stolen identity through the price He (Jesus) will pay.

Jesus Christ exchanged his robe of righteousness for our robe of “filthy rags” to change our identity (Isaiah 64:6). Now we are the righteousness of God in Christ. We are covered with the robe of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). For a new personality, Jesus gave his body and blood. He said this bread represents my body “eat it” and this drink is my blood, “drink from it all of you.” “For the life of a creature is in the blood…” (Leviticus 17:11).

From the ancient times to the New Testament, exchange of values is a fundamental part of Blood Covenant. (Abram’s Covenant with God is a great example.) The two covenant parties would usually exchange their robes (garment), belts and weapons. The robe represent a person’s identity and personality.

Belt symbolizes strength and power. It is also the holder of the weapons of warfare. Jesus did not leave out anything. He said “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you” (Luke 10:19). He gave His Belt! The weapon of our warfare are not physical they are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). He gave us His weapon of war!

The Whole Armor

To protect our identity, and function fully with our original DNA we need to have on all components of the armor God gave us. Again, let’s talk about the chemical composition and properties of some elements. Carbon dioxide (CO2) will chemically become Carbon monoxide and not function anymore as carbon dioxide (CO,) once a molecule of Oxygen is removed from the composition.  The same way CO could become just Oxygen. Another example, if you add a molecule of Oxygen to water (H2O), it changes to Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and will not serve as water anymore.  A policeman with only uniform, no badge no gun, one with badge only and teaser, or another one with gun plus all normal police officer equipment/accessories. Which of them will be more respected or could better stand opposition and attack.

  1. Belt of Truth

Notice that God started with the belt of truth. The first man’s identity was stolen through deception or lie. So the first weapon of defense and offense we Christians need for protection is TRUTH. For you will know the truth and the truth will make you free (John 8:32). I am the way, the truth and life…(John 14:6). Truth is power, because truth comes from knowledge and knowledge is power.

If you are familiar with powerlift. You’ll see that most of them that lift heavy weights have belt around their abs. Why? “Will wearing a belt actually increase your power, strength, or muscle growth? Yes! According to some research, wearing a belt will help increase all the above, at least for lower body exercises like the squat.” (Jim Stoppani, Ph.D.). When boxer and wrestlers win what is their trophy? Belt! Belt symbolizes strength and power. More than that, in ancient time, the belt is the holder of weapons; knife, sword, etc. Even now a policeman finds his belt a use holder of baton, gun, teaser etc. Our belt that holds all our weapons TRUTH. Not only does it holds weapons, the belt is at the middle of the armor, it is central to the armor hold the whole armor itself together. Without Truth, all other components fall apart.

  1. Breastplate of righteousness

Breastplate cover the chest. What is the most important part that bullet proof vest cover? The chest! That is where we have important organs like the heart. Solomon said guard your heart with all diligence from out of comes all issues of life! What protects our heart is righteousness; right standing with God. Through the sacrifice of death by crucifixion we were made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. That means God sees us as Jesus with no sin, no guilt and no condemnation. If we could see ourselves same way with the eyes of our heart, if we could think of ourselves the way He sees and thinks of us, we would retain and protect our identity

  1. Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel

The purpose of Footwear is not essentially dressing accessory or beautification. The primary reason we wear shoes is protection. Until you get to the street of gold, the landscape is rough and tough. The terrain has stones, or rocks that could cut or break the feet. There are different weather conditions it will be very cold sometimes, it will be very hot sometimes, if you know what I’m talking about. Its valley bottom sometimes and mountain tops some other times. What keeps us going and protect us from smashing our feet and falling is the gospel. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who preach good news (Isaiah 52:7). Being outreach focused protect us from losing our purpose.

  1. Shield of Faith

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4). Those who have God’s DNA, those who are in the image of God, having the identity of God overcome the world. They have victory through their faith and they overcome the tricks, tendencies of the world, the deception, delusion etc of satan. The shield that protects our identity, and all attacks of the enemy is faith. The just shall live by faith! “For we walk by faith [we [b]regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus we walk] not by sight or appearance.” (2 Corinthians 5:7 AMP). Knowing that most people define their identity or are defined by nurture (impact of environment), here we are warned that our identity is not physical, so it is not anything physical that protects our identity. We should not define people or live on the basis of physical reality, but on the basis of faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God.

  1. Helmet of Salvation:

Salvation is the access point, the gateway to the family of God, to being a child of God, having the DNA of God; the identity of God. Paul said work out your salvation with fear and trembling… (Philippians 2:12), and Jesus said carry your cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23). Salvation is the all-inclusive word of the gospel that is not limited to redemption, but includes protection, preservation, peace, power, prosperity, restoration, deliverance, victory etc. If you don’t want to lose your identity put your salvation foremost. Just like the head is the most important part. You can cut off the leg, hand, but cut off the head that is dead. If you lose your salvation that is identity death or death of identity!

  1. Sword of the Spirit

Proverbs 6:20-23, John 6:63, Psalm 18:30,

  1. Prayer

Matthew 26:40-43; And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41“Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42“Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.43“But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

1 Peter 5:8; Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Luke 21:36; Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
