Why Evangelism?

Text: Isaiah 61:1-7, Luke 19:10

Introduction

Evangelism offers a New Order. It opens doors.

Freedom from prison.  (Door of Freedom)

It’s jail breaking. It produces redemption, like redeeming a pawned item. When someone pawns an expensive wrist watch, or diamond ring, the pawn shop holds the item in custody and it is only released from their prison when the item is redeemed by paying the amount owed. Evangelism produces redemption, liberty, deliverance, victory and more (Isaiah 61:1-2)

It invokes transformation. (Door of Transformation)

  1. From ashes to beauty
  2. Joy replaces mourning
  3. Parise instead of heaviness (depression)

It transforms from unrighteousness to the Righteousness of God, makes human glorify God (Isaiah 61:3)

Transformation from poverty, curse to prosperity and blessings (Isaiah 61:4-5)

Appointment as Priest and Minister of God.

Inherent in redemption is the elvation of everyone who is redeemed to the full status of both holy and royal priest (Isaiah 61:6) (1 Peter 2:5,9)

Restoration  – Door of Restoration

Restoration of Honor

In actual fact, the transformation benefit offered by evangelism is really RESTORATION. They are inheritances that God gave to human from the beginning of the world.

Jesus simplified or summarized Isaiah 61 in that one line in Luke 19:10; “I came to seek and save the lost,” why? So that the lost can access their heritage.

It appears they do not stand the chance of salvation if they are not found. Then when they are evangelized and are redeemed, that automatically produces restoration. I say automatically referring to the spiritual dimension.

The biggest door evangelism provides is restoration! What is meaning of restoration?

Restoration English Definition; (online Dictionary)

  1. the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition.
  1. the return of a hereditary monarch to a throne, a head of state to government, or a regime to power.

That means bringing the person back to an original position. It is not a new location. It is only new in the sense that the person is now experiencing it for the first time, or again, but that was the place that person originated from. For example you visited Ancestry.com; then you discovered your lineage and you eventually visit Ireland, Scotland, Nigeria or Ghana, you might be new there experientially, but your bloodline is not.

There was a dislocation! The reason human need restoration that comes through redemption is because there was a dislocation spiritually and physically.

Dislocation

Man fell short of the glory of God. Man died spiritually, then he was displaced from his original location; the garden of Eden. (Look at the description of Isaiah 61, doesn’t it sound like the garden of Eden, a kind of unusual to normal life)

Man was dislocated from Eden – Genesis 3:20-24

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Sending them out was good for mankind. They have become bad, if they ate the fruit from the tree of life in that condition they will remain bad forever. They will make redemption impossible.

Implications of the displacement

Genesis 4:14-16; And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me

15 And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

Who is a fugitive and a vagabond?  One feature of a fugitive is that they are transient, no sense of security. They mostly remain in terrible state of fear; insecurity. The case of Secretary of Transportation Umaru Dikko. Think of the nomads.

Sin dislocated man. Isaiah 59:1-2; Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened,
That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

Romans 3:23; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 6:23; For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God’s Plan for the Lost – Evangelism is Needed

God does not delight in the death of sinners (Ezekiel 18:23, 32, Eze 33:11)

1 Timothy 2:4; who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Evangelism is needed; Romans 10:13-15;

For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Summary

We are learning the dynamics of Evangelism from the story of the Samaritan woman, first evangelist. We could ask ourselves why did Jesus initiate that evangelistic process? Why did He activate her?

Jesus came for the lost sheep of Israel, but Samaritans are also Abraham seeds, though were not in talking terms with the Jews. They were lost, bound, they need redemption.

Luke 13;10-12, 16; And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Euaggelizo, the preaching of glad tidings is needed to save the lost. If offers people the opportunity to be redeemed. Without Evangelism they will not hear of the goodnews of the gospel. Matthew 24:14

The compassionate act of winning souls for God. Which involves finding the lost, rescuing the lost, and reconciling the lost to God through persuasion and not coercion or deception.
